NEW STARTER REQUIRED. RETIREMENT OF MR D. P. M'NAB. CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. An important racing position in Canterbury is in the market, as Mr D. P. M’Nab has decided to retire from starting. It is no secret that he has never liked the job. He showed an aptitude for it when working the practice barrier at Riccarton; but it was only at the urgent request of many friends prominent in racing that he consented to take on race starting. While he would have relinquished the position earlier but for the pressure exerted on him from the same quarter, his present decision is final. He will continue to do the starting for the Canterbury Jockey Club until the Easter meeting is disposed of, that being the end of the season; but so far as his other appointments are concerned —and he acted for nearly every club in Canterbury—the Geraldine meeting next Thursday and Friday will mark his final appearance at the barrier. * It will be necessary, therefore, for all the provincial clubs to make other arrangements, and the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club will have plenty of onportunities during the next few months tor noting how new aspirants chape before it is necessary to make an appointment for Riccarton. The retirement of Mr M’Nab from this important and difficult racing position yyill create a vacancy not easy to fill satisfactorily. He was a success as a starter from the first day that he officiated, and his work has at all times been of a high standard. He possessed the full confidence of owners', trainers, riders, and the public, and there will be wide regret that he has decided to retire. In future he will confine his attention to his work as caretaker of the Riccarton racecourse, in which he is keenly interested, leaving the starter’s worries to other people.
