It is understood that preliminary work in connection with flaxmilling operations is to be put in hand before the end of the year at Grove’s swamp, situated between Lake Mahinapua and the Hokitika River (reports an exchange). The location of the proposed industry covers, an area of 2000 acres of swamp land. The land, which was originally in the Hokitika Harbour Board endowment area, was acquired by Butler Bros., Ltd., some years ago, and is now in the hands of a large company, which'intends to utilise it as a flaxmilling proposition. It is reported that the proposed industry when. in full swing will give employment to 200 hands. Coins of New Zealand currency , of 50 years ago, particularly the large penny tokens, are occasionally unearthed in dig-ging-gardens in Ashburton (remarks the Guardian). A resident of Grigg street, however, the . other day, dug up an unusual coin, this being a five centime piece, of the Republic Oriental Del Uruguay, of 1909; equivalent in value to our halfpenny.

The other morning an applicant for work who was at the Racing Club’s office estimated that there were 1500 present. He said that he never “saw such a crowd,” all pushing and jostling each other. Women fainted, and eventually a constable had to take charge and get the crowd in something like order. The assistant secretary of the club estimated -the number at 150, not 1500, and agreed that there was considerable crushing, one or two women having fainting turns.
