CAPTAIN J. B. RAINEY.

HIS RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED. WELLINGTON, September 17. Captain J. B. Rainey, joint manager in New Zealand for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, will retire at the end of this month. Captain Rainey was born in Gloucestershire and went to sea as an apprentice at the age of 14$ years in the Australian and China sailing ship trade. In 1885 he joined the old Albion Line (subsequently the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line) of sailing ships trading to New Zealand. He served as third mate, second mate, and chief officer of the ship Jessie Rgadman, and was afterwards chief officer of the refrigerated sailing ship Canterbury. Next he served as second and chief officer respectively of the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamers Matatua, Mamari, Karamea, lonic and Gothic under Captains Jennings, Kidley, Kempson, M'Dougall and Stewart. Captain Rainey subsequently joined the services of the Huddart Parker Company as master, and after being in charge of some of the company’s Australian coastal vessels he had command of the Westralia and Wimmera. In 1904 Captain Rainey transferred to the New Zealand branch of the Tyser Line as marine superintendent. The Tyser Line was later merged into the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, and Captain Rainey was appointed to the position of joint manager. He had a break in his sea going career several years ago when, as navigation officer, lie did the route survey work with a scientific expedition into Central Africa. On his retirement Captain Rainey will remain in New Zealand.
