MEETING OF CREDITORS.

A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Frederick Edwards, of Balclutha, was held at the courthouse on Wednesday. The amount owing to unsecured creditors was £l3O 9s Bd. and there was one secured creditor (J. H. Stevenson) to the amount of £2O. Assets were nil, and the deficiency was given as £l3O 9s Bd. Bankrupt, in his statement, said he was a labourer residing in Balclutha. For the last 13 years—since leaving Mataura —he had been in debt. While there he suffered a severe loss through a flood, which drowned a herd of cattle he had succeeded in getting together. He left Mataura in debt, and had never been able to get ahead. There had been a good deal of sickness in the family, and he had been in hospital at times himself. A year or two ago his wife and he agreed to sell all the furniture in an endeavour to meet the debts. For the last 12 months he had been engaged in contract work at Tahakopa and Maclennan, cutting posts and firewood. Lately he wasin partnership with a man called Craigie, who had recently filed. They did no good with their contracts, and he had been steadily going back. As some creditors had. been pressing him lately he decided to file. Ash and Son, 12s 6d; Dunedin Engineering and Steel Company, £2 3s; Stewarts (Balclutha), £2 18s 4d; Guest and Sons, Ltd., £22 5s Id; J. Tweedie, £1 14s; Blair and Stokes, £1 15s; George Smith (Papatowai), £6; Leslie Jenks, £l2; J. Smoult, £2; Lands Department, £7; J. Riddell, £3 10s; Farmers’ Trading Company (Auckland), £3 10s; J. H. Stevenson (Balclutha), £4O. Mr J. T. Walter represented, the bankrupt, but owing to the absence of the required quorum of creditors the meeting was adjourned sine die.
