An interesting visitor in the person of Dr Adams (Government astronomer and siesmologist) of the Hector Observatory, Wellington, has been visiting Roxburgh in connection with the selection of a suitable locality for the establishment .of an observatory. He has already visited several centres in Otago and Canterbury, where observation tests have been made. During the next fortnight similar tests will be made by his assistant, Mr Crust. To a' deputation, which waited upon him on Thursday morning, Dr Adams gave an interesting account of the project in view. The establishment of an observatory as far south as it is possible to have it so that complete observations may be made and records taken for the southern hemisphere was essential. New Zealand was the most southern part of the Empire,. and was admirably situated for the purpose. The next matter was to select a locality possessing the necessary weather and sky conditions, as well as a plenitude of power and water. Tn this latter respect the site visited by Dr Adams offered all these conditions, and it remained for his assistant-'to discover how it would meet with the) other requirements. The deputation assured Dr Adams of its assistance in any way possible.
