SMUGGLING OF SILK.
CHINAMAN CAUGHT RED-HANDED. WELLINGTON, August 21. A bulky pillow led to the apprehension of Yee Yuk, a Chinese, aged 42, who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of having attempted to smuggle ashore 12 pieces of silk, valued at approximately £73. The Collector of Customs said that Yee Yuk arived by the Maheno from Sydney on Tuesday. Among the luggage he brought ashore were three pillows, one of which appeared rather bulkv to the Customs searcher, who said to the accused: ‘This is a hard pillow you have got.” Yee Yuk replied that he liked a hard pillow to sleep on. In the pillow the Customs officer found three rolls of silk, and five invoices in accused’s travelling case showed that he had 12 pieces altogether. The other nine pieces were found subsequently sewn inside a quilt. The accused was fined £25, and the goods were forfeited.
