Throughout the matches were excellently played in a delightful spirit of good comradeship. Every day, except on playing days, the boys were entertained in some form. On Wednesday Mr and Mrs James Blair entertained guests to the number of some 200 to a most delicious tea at their residence, Abbotsford Farm. It was a glorious afternoon, and the cars assembled outside the Early Settlers’ Hall, where 40 or more took the visitors for a drive over Flagstaff, out through Outram, and finally to Mr Blair’s residence. The guests wore their basket ball frocks, and he team mascot, a gaily dressed kewpie, held a place of honour. Miss Beryl Edwards, in an appreciative speech, expressed the thanks of all to Mrs Thorburn for her hospitality, and gave her a bouquet of violets, while later the vice-president of the club handed to Miss Thorburn a miniature silver cup, telling her of the confidence the team had in her leadership. Games and other pleasant pastimes made the party all too short, and the enjoyment will be remembered by all the guests. A very pleasant time was spent by a number of interested people at the Wellington Borstal Institution for girls at Point Halswell on Tuesday afternoon. The occasion of the party was the presentation to the girls of a handsome gramophone from a "Wellington firm, the gift being handed over by Mr H. Wilson, who gave credit to Mrs Peter Fraser as haying “ inspired ” it. Her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson was to have been present, but was unfortunately prevented from coming, much regret being expressed by the Controller-general (Mr B. L. Dallard) on behalf of all present, as her Excellency is one who has taken the greatest interest in the Borstal and the girls. Mr Wilson presented the gramophone and some fine records to the girls, and played and sang to them himself, later leading them in some community singing, the whole entertainment being immensely appreciated by his audience. Mr Dallard gave him cordial thanks, and sent a message of special appreciation to the firm, mentioning the great kindness of Wellington people in general and the Borstal Committee in particular to the inmates. He addressed a few kindly and very helpful remarks to the girls. They were then left to enjoy their gramophone, while the guests went over the institution, expressing their high appreciation of the arrangements made for the benefit- of the girls. Afternoon tea concluded a very interesting afternoon. St. Patrick’s College Old Boys’ third annual ball passed off must successfully, being held at St. Francis’ Hall, which was charmingly decorated in blue and white, under supervision of Mrs Chamness, matron of St. Patrick’s Hostel, At the head of the hall was “Leo,” the mascot of the football team, enthroned in blue and white. There were close on 400 present, as the ball was held at the end of the football tournament, when there wen a great many “old boys”

assembled in Wellington to view the matches. The Rev. Father Ryan received the guests, making all cordially welcome. All the arrangements made by the energetic committee were most successful, and the ball was a very great success. There were guests from Hawera, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Napier, and other places, as well as a representative gathering from Wellington. Supper, music, and floor were all of the best, and dancing was kept up till a very late hour. Yet another party has taken place in the Old Legislative Council room, which appears to be becoming a favourite entertaining ground for parliamentary people, and certainly it is a place that lends itself far better and more attractively than the members' wives’ room, which is somewhat bare and needs much decora-, tion. On Wednesday the wives of members of Parliament were “at home,” and their special guests of honour were her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson and the wives of Cabinet Ministers (including Miss Downie Stewart). The tea was set on a long table down the room, and the flowers were artistically arranged in shades of yellow, daffodils, marigolds, and freesias being used most effectively. The hostesses ranged themselves near the door and received the guests, her Excellency arriving accompanied by Lord Waleran and Miss Dugdale. An appreciated entertainment was given by Miss Mary Mitchell (Auckland), Mesdames Townley and Wilfred Andrews, Miss C. Guy.
