THE AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.

A PROGRESSIVE PROPOSAL.

A meeting was held in the- Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s board room on Friday afternoon, and was attended by Mr W. O. M'Kellar (in the chair), Messrs E. C. Hazlett, H. C. Campbell, T. T. Ritchie, H. Turner, and Charles Todd (representing the Otago A. and P. Society) Messrs J. Sutherland Ross, J. Hogg and G. W. Reid (representing the Manufacturers’ Association) ; Councillor Douglas and Mr W. H. MacKenzie (representing the Tramway Department) ; and Mr J. Y. Love (contractor).

The chairman explained that for some time past meetings had been held between representatives of the Manufacturers’ Association and the society to considei - proposals for —.’oeuring a building which would pn '.a the necessary accommodation required by the manufacturers and. the society. Mr M’Kcllar further explained that during the last few months the Manufacturers’ Association had gone to the trouble of procuring a plan showing the lay-out of Tahuna Park, and also a plan of a proposed

building, which would give both bodies ample accommodation. In Mr M'Kellar's opinion the main question to be decided at present was whether it was a sound policy to consider a proposal to remove the winter show to Tahuna Park. It was fully recognised that the present Crawford street building did not even meet our own requirements, and it was utterly impossible for the society to meet the requirements of the manufacturers. It was admitted that the society’s Crawford street building was a central one, and the position could not be improved, but it was not only too small to meet the society’s requirements, but also it was becoming too costly to be retained for show purposes.

After a very full and free discussion by all members present it was decided that the Agricultural and Pastoral Association should call a general meeting to consider the question of erecting buildings at Tahuna Park suitable for summer and winter shows, and to consider empowering the society's executive to enter into negotiations with the bodies concerned to enable the whole scheme to be worked out, ami if considered to be in the interests of all comcerncd to be proceeded with. Il was also decided that the president and secretaries of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society and the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association and a representative appointed by the Dunedin City Council should be appointed a sub-com-mittee to prepare a report of’the whole position and submit it to a general meeting of the Manufacturers’ Association and the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Societv.
