THEFT OF BUTTER.
TWO YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT IMPOSED. WELLINGTON, August 3. Arthur Hobbs, a carrier, aged 27, was sentenced this morning for the theft of 500 boxes of butter, valued at £5OO, from Joseph Nathan and Co. It w’as stated that Hobbs had absconded from his bail. His Honor said that, as the result of the prisoner’s action, the unfortunate surety had to forfeit £lOO, but counsel said that he would be reimbursed. His Honor said the prisoner was a first offender, but it was not a case in which the Benefits of the First Offenders Act should be extended to him. He would, be sentenced to two years with hard labour.
