TRADING IN OPIUM.
TWO MEN FINED.
WELLINGTON, August 1
Harry Thomas Downes, aged 38, g steward on the Marama, was fined £2OO, in default six months’ imprisonment on a .charge of importing prepared opium. Cecil Wallingford Brown, aged 49, a taxi driver, was fined £25, in default one month’s imprisonment for being found in possession of prepared opium. Twelve tins valued at £240 were seized by the' Customs officials when they searched Downes and Brown as the latter were leaving the ship. Downes pleaded guilty, and Brown not guilty. Eight tins were found in Brown’s possession and four in Downes’s. The Customs collector said they had suspected Downes for some time. Brown had met him for a long time, the taxi generally being left outside the wharf gates. Through his counsel Downes stated that he was only an agent on commission, delivering to a man in Wellington from a man in Sydney.
