PACKING OF VEGETABLES.
VIEWS OF PRODUCERS. W ELLINGTON, August 3. A deputation from the Hutt Valley Producers’ Association interviewed the Minister of Agriculture (Mr O. J. Hawken) to-day .requesting that before any stringent regulations to cope with the false packing of vegetables were introduced they should be consulted. While quite unsympathetic in regard to false packing, the deputation sought to impress on the Minister that there were two sides to the question, and that it did not matter if the big vegetables were on the top so long as the article sold was a fair sample. A case was quoted of lettuce being sold on the market at 2d and retailed at 6d. Mr Hawken said the system of standardisation would have to be taken into consideration. He referred to what standardisation had done in regard to the export industry in butter, etc., and predicted a similar result in regard to the local marketing of garden produce.
