OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY.
TIMARU, August 4. The Otago representative team travelled to Timaru on Saturday to play South Canterbury. The match was played at the Timaru Park under conditions which would have been ideal but for a northwest breeze which blew across the ground, and proved rather disagreeable. The match was a good fast exposition of the game, in which Otago’s superior knowledge of the finer points eventually won them the day.
South Canterbury was the first to attack, and kept the Otago defence busy till some good passing between Woodfield and Mayston resulted in the former scoring. Otago 1, S&uth Canterbury nil. Otago kept up the pressure, but repeated infringements nullified several opportunities of scoring. The Greens then came away, and gained a corner, but Les Ireland cleared well, and sent Edson away, a corner resulting, which, however, was fruitless. The Greens again came away, but Jory relieved, and L. Silver, with a good run, invaded South Canterbury circle, but his centre was not taken. The Greens returned to the attack, but Otago was soon back, and came very near to scoring, but offside spoilt the effort. Edson came again, however, and’ centred well to Mayston. who made no mistake. Otago 2, South Canterbury nil. The Greens then set up a strong attack, but Ireland saved well at a critical moment, and s.ent his forwards away. The home side was not to be denied, and soon returned. This time Barrett cleared to L. Silver, who in turn transferred to Woodfield, whose shot, at goal lacked direction. Half time was called shortly afterwards, with South Canterbury attacking. On resumption, the sun. which had descended low on the horizon, proved, for a time, troublesome to the Blues, and it was notlong before, after a good effort. Quartermain opened the score for the Greens. Otago 2. South Canterbury 1. The Blues attacked from the resultant bully, but the Greens were soon back, and Ralston culminated a good forward rush by equalising. Otago 2, South Canterbury This reverse seemed to stir the Blues, who .were playing first-class hockey, and they soon gained the upper hand. Woodfield netted, but was ruled offside.- The Blue forwards attacked again, however, and Mayston, with a fast shot, put Otago in the lead. Otago 3, South Canterbury
From the bully the Greens attacked. Twose saving well.- After a good, combined movement by the Blue forwards. Woodfield again scored. Otago 4, South Canterbury 2.
Up and down play followed for a period, in which Gurr, for Otago, was prominent. The next score resulted from a good dash down the wing by Edson, who transferred to Mayston, the latter netting. Otago 5, South Canterbury 2. The Blues now held the upper hand, and but for the sound defence of the South Canterbury right-back and the goalie, the score would have been larger. The final score came when Edson carried the ball into South Canterbury territory and centred to Watson, who sent the ball into the net. The match ended shortly after, the final score being:— Otago 6 goals. South Canterbury . . 2 goals. Messrs L. Davis (South Canterbury) and C. Sew Hoy (Otago) controlled the plav. JUNIOR GAME.
