Since the great Bennie Osler showed the All Blacks how easy it is (when chances offer) to pot a field goal in a Rugby game the fever has spread to Hawkes Bay, and each Saturday since the first test in South Africa has found local players exploiting this method of scoring (says the Daily Telegraph). Last Saturday week in Hastings one junior won the game for his side by this means, but it is doubtful if Bennie Osler himself could have shown points to another junior who “gave it a go.” This youth secured the ball in his own twenty-five, and, running to the mark, 10 yards on his own side of the halfway line, a distance of at least about 65 yards from the.goal posts, he let fly with a pot. The ball sailed high and far, but unfortunately the direction was a . few, feet out, otherwise it would have been the greatest “pot” ever seen in district, or possibly in New Zealand. It certainly deserved a better fate.
“ Take off your hat,” is a command often heard in court when some neglectful male puts his hat on before leaving (remarks the Wanganui Herald).
