CASUALTIES.

A FARMER’S DEATH. HAMILTON, August 2. An inquest was opened this afternoon concerning the death of Samuel Ernest Kemp, aged 59, a farmer, of Claudelands. I’he evidence showed that a bottle of poison had been found in deceased’s pocket. The inquest was adjourned.

TUNNEL FATALITY. AUCKLAND, August 3. Holding that the tunnel was as safe for the workers as it could be made, Mr W. R. M'Kean, SAI., coroner, returned a verdict of accidental death at the inquest concerning the death of William Everett, aged 34. married, who. by a fall of earth on July 13, was suffocated when trapped in a tunnel. Returning his verdict, Mr M'Kean said that all the usual and necessary precautions had been taken to make the tunnel safe for the workers. All the timber in the tunnel was sound. It appeared that the slip was due to the heavy rains experienced about the time of the fatality.

RUN OVER BY MOTOR LORRY. WELLINGTON, August 3. Miss May Eyres, a middle-aged woman residing at 22 Queen street, Petone, was run over by a heavily-laden motor lorry on the Hutt road to-night, and died as a result of her injuries. Riding her bicycle out of the Wellington Woollen, Mills’ grounds near Petone, she collided with the front wheel of a lorry which was coming slowly from Wellington. She was thrown on to the road, and the back wheel of the lorry passed over her. The vehicle was driven by Francis Patrick Kelly, who was employed by the Geange Kelly Carrier Company, Upper Hutt. The deceased was employed as a wool spinner. Life was extinct on the arrival of the ambulance. An inquest will be held.

KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR CAR. WELLINGTON, August 3.

A broken ankle, shock, bruises, and cuts on the head and legs were suffered by J. C. Cowlishaw, of Wadestown, when he collided with a motor car and was thrown under a motor bus near the Petone railway crossing last night. He had a miraculous escape from death.

CRUSHED BY FALLING TIMBER. WELLINGTON, August 3. A stack of timber fell on a man named M. Briggs at Odlin’s Petone Timber Yards this morning and fractured his left thigh and left arm. He was removed to hospital. MOTOR CYCLIST’S DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, August 3. The body found on Kaikoura road yesterday beside a damaged motor cycle has been definitely identified as that of Herbert Smart, aged 37, single, a farm labourer at Wharanui, Marlborough. He had been spending a holiday with friends at Oxford, and was returning to his work. At the inquest to-day the verdict was that death was caused through his -motor cycle going over a bank, but there was no evidence to show how the accident happened.

WOMAN’S SUDDEN DEATH. AUCKLAND, August 4. Mrs F. Moody, aged 61, a widow, of Devonport, collapsed on a city-bound ferry last evening, and died immediately on admission to hospital, whence she had been recently discharged after a heart attack.

MOTOR LORRY SMASH. LEVIN, August 4. A serious motor accident occurred on the main road between Foxton and Levin to-day. A lorry owned by Messrs Robertson and Slade, contractors, Taihape, was proceeding to Wellington. Mr Slade was driving, and the other occupants were three of the firm’s employees. Near the Wirokino bridge, instead of taking a sharp turn the lorry went over the bank, falling 12 feet and overturning. John Smart, aged 40, married, a bricklayer, was so badly injured that he died almost immediately. Charles Harding, aged 35, married, a labourer, was seriously injured and was reifloved to the Palmerston North Hospital. Both men were riding behind the cab. Three others who were in the cab were uninjured.

DEATH FROM NATURAL CAUSES. The inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of David Cooper, aged 48 years, who died in the Hospital on July 13 after a very brief illness, was concluded on Friday morning, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M, who sat as coroner. The inquest had been previously adjourned to enable a post-mortem examination of the body to be made. Dr A. M. Drennan gave evidence yesterday that death was due to natural causes, and the coroner returned a verdict in accordance with that testimony. INJURIES TO HEAD. A middle-aged man named George Heads, who resides in Gladstone road, North-East Valley, was admitted to the Hospital at 12.10 p.m. on Friday with injuries to his head and abrasions received through being knocked down by a motor delivery van at the corner of King and Albany streets. He has been placed on the seriously ill list. CYCLIST INJURED. While riding a motor cycle along King Edward street on Thursday morning a man named John Frederick Mills collided with a car, and’ received head injuries

and abrasions. The injured man, who is ab. asions. 'lhe injured man, who is ma”-ied and resides at 11 Lawson street, Roslyn, was admitted at 8.38 a.m. to the Hospital. Inquiries made there late last evening elicited the information that he was making satisfactory progress. STRUCK BY HOCKEY BALL. Eller. Murray, aged 16 years, residing at the Botanic Gardens, was admitted to the Hospital on Saturday afternoon, suffei ing from injuries to her face, received through being struck by a ball when playing in a hockey match. INJURIES TO EYE. Alexander Farquharson, aged 55 years, fell when riding at the Hunt Club’s meeting at Wingatui on Saturday afternoon. He was admitted to the Hospital suffering from a lacerated left eye. The injured man is a dairy farmer at Signal Hill.
