COSY CORNER CLUB.

PROGRAMME FOR 1928. Dear Comrades of the Cosy Corner, —1 address myself not only to those who are already members of the club and bars written to ‘our page before, but also to the new-comers whom I expect to join us this year. Wo have had a long rest —October, 1927, was the month of our last meeting—and done much of interest since we were last together. Now is the time to think of re-uniting. I have devised a programme, which, I hope, will interest you, for the subjects are wide and leare plenty of room for originality. But, for the first meeting, I want you to choose whatever topic you pl ase, preferably something that has made an impression on you since last year. There have been, for instance, the daylight saving venture, new books which you have read, holidays, overseas events, and many more such to occupy your minds. The first meeting ought to be the most entertaining of all, because of the variety of its subject-matter. I am looking forward with eagerness to receiving your letters. But the ether meetings can bo interesting also. Try not to write about the obvious —there are more sides than one to every subject; if you have a chance to he humorous, take it; and make your letters as pleasant to read as if you were sending them to somebody in hospital who needs to be cheered, not depressed with cold facts. It is not necessary to keep really hard and fast to the title set, to write an interesting letter; Charles Lamb in his " Essays of Elia ’’ can prove that. And yet it is not good to go too far afield. Look upon your task as a happy, beautiful one, and the results will be likewise. I leave you with best wishes for the coming season, and the hope that you will do your best to make the record of the Cosy Corner Club better this year than ever before.—Your friend, ELAINE [ln the absence of Esther overseas, Elaine is conducting the Cosy Corner Club meetings. —Ed. Otago Witness.] TOPICS. First Meeting.—May: As usual, this will be a members’ meeting, contributors choosing their own subject, or, if they prefer, rewriting some piece of prose which has interested them recently. Date for sending in Contributions, May 7. Second Meeting.—June: “If I Could Change.” In this meeting, members are invited to discuss the question “If I could change my identity, who should I like to be (or to have been), and why?” We are said to be generally dissatisfied with our lot nowadays, and this meeting will give us a chance to air our grievances. Date for sending in contributions, June 11. Third Meeting.—July: “What incidents of My Childhood Impressed Me Most.” How often have we heard the sentence “ When I was a child" begin a most entertaining narrative. Members should revel in the possibilities of this meeting. Date for sending in contributions, July 9. Fourth Meeting.—August. “ The Uses and Abuses of Motion Pictures.” This is a subject which always evokes strong arguments. Everybody has some sort of opinion about it. Date for sending in contributions, August 13. Fifth Meeting.—September: “The Seasons, and What is Lovely About Them.” This might almost be called “ Sweet are the Uses of Adversity,” for almost everybody has a grouch of some kind against the seasons. Let us try to discover where their merts are. Date for sending in contributions, September 10. Sixth Meeting.—October: “What Was (or is) the Most Ideal Timo to Live in, and Why.” The imaginations of the members can have full play here. This is a subject of wide dimensions.
