Good average bags marked the opening of the shooting season on Lake Ellesmere on Tuesday (says the Lyttelton Times). There were a large number of sportsmen out, the largest seen for some time, and the bags in most cases ran between seven and ten, with a fair number of Canadian geese. In the early* morning the weather conditions were ideal, but when the wind fell between 8 and 9 o’clock, conditions became worse. During the day, and particularly in the afternoon, there were no flights of birds at all, and as a result poor bags were obtained during that time. The pukeko season opened on Wednesday. From reports to hand, the bags were poor.
