QUESTION OF OIL FIRES.

NO LOCAL INSURANCES. GOVERNMENT’S INACTION CRITICISED. WELLINGTON, April 27. At to-day’s meeting of the Wellington Fire Board the question of oil fires was briefly considered. It was stated that big oil companies operating in the Dominion carried no local insurances on their stocks, although they were probably insured from well to store elsewhere. As a result companies were not contributing to the board’s funds, although enjoying the protection of the board’s services. This, it was stated, was one of the matters under consideration for future legislation. It was stated that the recommendations made nearly a year ago at the Fire Board's conference had been held up by the inaction of the Department of Internal Affairs. As a result of the Government’s inaction the fire regulations throughout tne Dominion could not be completed. It was therefore decided to approach the department with a view to finalising matters.
