EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board, which was begun on Wednesday morning, was attended by Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), J. Horn, M.P., J. Smith, D. T. Fleming, M.L.C., J. Mitchell, R H. Todd, G. Livingstone, J H. Wilkinson, and P. M'Kinlay. The application of the Oamaru North committee for a subsidy for asphalting portion of the school grounds at an estimated cost of £l3O was granted. The Waitapeka committee applied for a subsidy for gravelling at the school at an estimated cost of £4s.—The matter was referred to the architect with power to act.

The Hillend committee applied for an enlargement of the school building. The architect reported that on a 10ft basis there was accommodation for 32 children, and the present roll number was 31. To extend the class room 4ft would cost about •£llo.—The chairman and. (Messrs M'Kinlay and Fleming were appointed a committee to investigate the matter. On the recommendation o£ the architect the application of the teacher at Hooper’s Inlet for repairs to the residence at a cost of £l2 was granted. In respect of an application by the Stirling committee for painting the roof of the school, the architect reported that where roof water was used for drinking purposes it was not advisable to paint the iron. He would inspect the' roof at the first opportunity. It was decided to erect a new tank at the Kakapuaka School at a cost of £l2. The Cookery Instructress at the Toko mairiro Technical School reported that, owing to the drinking fountains now being connected with the tanks, there was not sufficient water for the cookery classes. The Architect recommended that the borough water be laid on. The sale of the tanks and -stand, if thought desirable, would more than cover the cost. —The architect was given power to act. The application of the head teacher at Mosgiel for various repairs and improve ments at the school at an estimated cost of £32 12s was left in the hands of the architect.

It was decided to carry out renovations at the residence at Kaitangata at an estimated cost of £67. The Teacher at Shag Point applied for the installation of electric light in the residence at a cost of £l3.—lt was stated that the matter would be attended to in its turn. The Education Department intimated that . a grant would be made for the erection of two separate class rooms for the secondary department at Cromwell.— “ So far so good,” remarked the chair man. The Head Teacher at Pukeuri reported that the school had been entered during the Easter holidays and five panes of glass broken. Nothing had been taken, although an attempt had been made to open some of the cupboards.—lt was decided to place the matter in the hands of the police. The meeting was concluded ov: Thursday. Mr J. The attendance officer - reported as follows : — ‘ I find the attendance at present is being affected to some extent by illness. (fen visiting several of the city and suburban schools I found that scarlet fever and mumps were prevalent, but so fa l- not a great number of cases have been reported. Apart from the children who are affected, however, the attendance is very satisfactory’. Proceedings are being taken against a parent at Mosgiel for his persistent indifference towards the education of his children.” The report was adopted. GENERAL. lhe Outram committee applied for the removal of the gallery and the lowering of four windows in the infant room. The architect reported that this work was necessary in order satisfactorily to place the new furniture for which the new committee was providing one-third of the cost, lhe estimated cost- of the alterations was £/s.—Granted. The Anderson’s Bay committee applied for permission to make an addition to the gym nasi ti m. —Granted. An invitation from the Macandrew Road Ex-pupils’ Association to a memorial service in the school grounds on Anzac Day was accepted. The tender of Mr C-. Bragg, of South' Dunedin, for the erection of a new school at Rare wood at a cost of £397 ICs was accepted. Accounts amounting to £21,715 19s 9d were passed for payment.
