MUNICIPAL TRADING.
WELLINGTON TRAMS AND LIGHT. SATISFACTORY FINANCIAL YEAR. WELLINGTON, April 19. Wellington has hac 1 a satisfactory financial year so far as the tramways and electric lighting are .concned. The surplus on the tramways is 110,475, and on the electric lighting almost £51,000. The tramway profits a”e discounted considerably by losses on the operation of the buses.
The total expenditure on tramways was £425,758; passengers carried 45,413,127, and tram miles run 4,164,827. The passengers carried represent an increase of 1,500,000 over 1926-27. The figures for the bus operations, which run counter to the tramways, are interesting, and are as follows:— Revenue, £20,396; traffic expenses, £11,713; general expenses, £1408; repairs and maintenance, £8327; power expenses, £4848; depreciation of buses, £7796; total operating expenses, £34,092; debit balance, £13,696. The passengers carried totalled 1,419,214, compared with 1,707,731 for 1926-27. The bus miles run were 376,073, compared with 427,710 in 1926-27. The total revenue on the two services was £470,325, and the expenditure was £459,850. The abnormal lighting yeai was due largely to the difficulties at Mangahoe and the City Council supplying the Government with a great deal of power. The total revenue was £339 #79, and the total expenditure and charges £289,019.
