WELLINGTON RAILWAYS.
DECREASED PASSENGER REVENUE. WELLNGTON, April 10. . Though the number of passengers carried in the Wellington railway district for the year ended March 31 last shows an increase, the revenue derived shows a decrease as compared with the preceding ■year. Ordinary passengers increased by 337,873, season tickets by 20,220, and bearer tickets by 2373, yet the revenue from passengers showed a decrease of £6984 on the previous year. This is admitted to be the reSul’- of motor com-, petition, which has taken away many shorter distance passengers. The parcels traffic shows little altera tion, but there is. a decrease in freight as a w’hole. An increase in the sheep and pigs carried does not offset the fallings off in timber and general goods. The total revenue from all sources was £1,314,247, compared with £1,327,380 for the previous :year;-a decrease of £13,133, or slightly less than 1 per cent.
