SWIMMING
* ARCHERFIELD CARNIVAL. There was a large attendance of parents and friends at the annual swimming sports of Archerfield School, which were held on Wednesday at the Municipal Baths. There was a lengthy programme of twenty-five events, which were swum off quickly in an hour and a-half. Mr Matheson, custodian of the baths, acted as starter, and Mr John MTndoc judged the diving. The Senior Championship was won by N. Fleming, who won all three events, H. Carswell being runnerup. E. Halliday won the Junior Championship, the runner-up being H. M Culloch. Miss Newton was in charge of proceedings, and is to be congratulated on the promptitude with which the races were swum off. The following are the results :—■ ' / ' 100 Yards’ Senior Championship.—N. Prefects v. School.—Prefects 1. Tn terstandard Relay Race.—Standard VI 1. Interform Relay Race.—Form VI 1. FAREWELL TO MISS MILLER. ENTERTAINED BY KIWI CLUB. On Thursday evening in the Embassy Salon a farewell social was tendered Miss Kathleen Miller, who is about to leave for Amsterdam to take part in the Olympic Games, by the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club. There was a fair attendance, and the function was presided over by Mr B. S. Irwin (president of the club). Mr Irwin explained that whilst the main object of the gathering was to bid farewell to Miss Kathleen Miller, the annual distribution of prizes would also be made. He referred briefly to the success of elub members during the year, and concluded by introducin'; Mr X MTudoe (president of the Otago Swimming Centre) and Cr C. H. Hayward who was representing the City Council. Cr Hayward referred to the interest taken in swimming by the City Council, and stated that by next summer it was hoped to Lave many improvements made at St. Clair, and also to the Municipal Baths.
Mr MTndoe reviewed Miss Miller’s record as a competitive swimmer, and also outlined I riefly the New Zealand team’s- itinerary after leaving the Dominion, mentioning that after the Olympic Games the team would compete at the Tail-teaun Games at Dublin, th-.-. Empire Athletic Championships in London. and would then probably visit South Africa on the way home. He said he was sure that Miss Miller would be one of the six finalists at the games, and thar she had an excellent chance of winning Die 400 metres’ race. On behalf of the Otago Centre he asked Miss Miller to .accept a manicure set as a token of th’ regard in which she was held. Mr Irwin presented to Miss Miller a miniature cup stating that as she had stood aside from the championship of the club this year to give other competitors a chance, it had been decided not to let her go away without, taking with her a minia turn of the Ladies’ Challenge Cup. Cr Hayward added the best wishes of the City Council, and' impressed on Miss Miller the fact that she was not only representing New Zealand in the games, but was also going as an ambasasdor to a meeting of the nations. Miss Miller briefly returned thanks. The folowing prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Irwin:— Senior Challenge Cup.—N. H. Bailey. Junior Girls’ Championship (Irwin Cup).—Miss Clarice Lang. Junior Otago Championship— Miss C. Lang. RECORD BY DUTCH WOMAN. AMSTERDAM, April 18. Miss Marie Baron, one of Holland’s principal women swimming competitors at the forthcoming Olympiad, established a new world’s record for the breast stroks 200 metres by covering the distance in 3 min IGsec, which is 2-ssec better than her own previous world’s record.
