LAPSE FROM ABSTINENCE.

CHRISTCHURCH. August 25. After 15 months’ abstinence from strong drink. Donald M'Lean, a farmer, came to the sale at Addington on August 17. At tea time that day he drank three “ whiskies.” and set off for his home in Allen street. He ran into a wagon, damaging his car. and making the horses of the wagon bolt. This morning M’Lean pleaded not guilty to charges of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car ami negligent driving in Allen street, and guilty to breaking his prohibition order. After hearing evidence, the magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) said: “I am going to treat the charges as one so as not to be unduly hard on the defendant. He will be fined £lO. and costs. His present license is cancelled, and he is prohibited from obtaining another one for 12 months after April 1, 1928.”
