ONE-MAN TRAMS.
APPEARANCE IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTHCURCH, August 22. One-man trams made their first appearance in Christchurch on the St. Martin’s line to-day. Three single-deck trailers have been converted to electric cars for 4>ie purpose, and are provided with safety devices in order to minimise the risk of accident. Notices are displayed at each end of the cars, one saying “Pay as you enter at front end, please.” The system of paying fares is similar to that adopted on the Tramway Board’s buses, which are operated by one man only, but at busy times conductors will also travel with the cars on part of the journey. The through service to North Brighton was discontinued to-day, the terminus now being Burwood, whence motor buses will take up the passenger service to the beach. These changes are in accordance with the board’s policy of reducing the operating expenses.
