DAVIS CUP MATCH

At the opening of the Davis Cup matches between France and Japan, winners in the European and American zones respectively, to decide who shall meet America in the final, the first of the singles resulted : Cochet (France) defeated Ohta, 6—o, 6—3, 6—2. In the semi-final Lacoste defeated Harada, 6—l, 6—l, 6—2.

FRANCE BEATS JAPAN. NEW YORK, August 26. F rance eliminated Japan in the Davis Cup, Brugnon and Cochet defeating Harada and Toba, 9—7, 6—l, 6 2.

NOTED FRENCH PLAYERS. NEW YORK, August 27. Captain Gillou, of-the French Davis Cup team which defeated Japan, announces that his players may make a six months' tour of Australia, South Air erica, and South Africa, subject to tlie approval of the French Lawn Tennis Federation and the ability of Dorotra to arrange his business affairs. The team would start on October 15 from Paris.

RUGBY, August 26. Miss Betty Nuthall, who, though the youngest competitor, distinguished herself at the Wimbledon tournament this season, has reached the fourth round of the American women’s singles championship. When play was opened yesterday al] the British players were still in the championship, which has never yet been won by an Englishwoman, but after Miss Nuthall had won the opening match of the day against Miss Penelope Anderson, of Virginia, all her country-women wore beaten. Miss Nuthall’s victory takes the girl champion of England into the last eight.
