A thoughtless action which might have ended in serious consequences occurred near the railway embankment between Brunner and Stillwater, where the line runs parallel to the road (states the Greymouth Star). Some young men were occupying a carriage on the train proceeding to Stillwater, and one of them threw a bottle down on to the roadway. A motor lorry, in which a woman and her child were passengers, was on the road, and the bottle missed the child’s head by a very narrow margin, and struck the hood of the lorry. The driver of the lorry, who was coming from Spring Creek to Taylorville, was driving close to the embankment at the time, owing to the potholes in the centre of the road, and this fact resulted in the passengers being sheltered to a certain extent by the embankment. The incident has been reported to the railway authorities, and bottle-throwing is likely to lose its popularity as a pastime.
