DAIRYING FOR PROFIT.
VALUE OF SOUND METHODS. WANGANUI, July 23. Dairying in the Wanganui district is steadily developing, and the number of herds will be considerably increased this season.
That dairying is a remunerative concern if a good butter-fat producing herd is maintained is evidenced bv the returns of a r 50-acrc dairy farm within 10 miles of Wanganui. The farm is carrying at present 30 cows, two bulls, three two-year-old heifers, 18 yearlings, and two horses —a total of 55 head. There is plenty of feed to carry the stock through the winter. The returns, not including milk and butter for household use and feeding the 18 pedigree calves partly on new milk each day till the first week in January, 1927, were 10,5001 b of butter-fat at Is 2d per lb. An advance payment has been made of £612, and the owner expects another 3d per lb butter-fat bonus, bringing the total amount probably to £743. The herd consists of pedigree Jerseys, and herd-testing, combined with C. O. R. testing, is carefully carried out.
