HOUSES ENDANGERED.

CRACK APPEARS IN ROADWAY. AUCKLAND, July 27. Without much preliminary warning a huge crack appeared in the roadwav at the bottom of Sentinel read, Ponsonby, this afternoon, and there was danger of a landslide following. A two-storeyed house, occupied by Mr A. J. Billington and his family, close bv is seriously threatened, and the precaution was taken of evacuating the building and removing the furniture. Steps were also taken 16 take the chimney down. An adjoining house, occupied by Mr A. Gifford, is also threatened but to a lesser degree. The crack extends underneath Mr Billington’s house, and has thrown the portion of the building overlooking the sea out of alignment. Other cracks are showing up on the cliff face, and water is percolating through the retaining wall.
