“Shellback” writes in the Auckland Star: “The master of the smart little brig Eileen Donan was a native of Waipu, where most of the good skippers of that period hailed from. When bound from Hokianga to Sydney with a cargo of timber the vessel became becalmed. The skipper came on deck with his bagpipes, and, walking up and down the quarterdeck. played some of those stirring tunes which only the true Celt Scot can properly appreciate. Presently a soft, fair wind sprang up, and the mate trimmed sail, and the ship went on her course. The skipper continued piping, and the wind increased until there was a full-sail breeze. He thoroughly believed in the efficacy of the bagpipes to raise the wind, and said that they never failed him.”
