An amusing answer was given by Dr J. C. Collins to an iiiterjector who interrupted him in his address to ratepayers on harbour affairs the other evening (says the Gisborne Times). “How many of you could afford to nay £2 per £lOOO capital value for 25 years?” asked the doctor. “We could if we got a harbour,” came a voice. “I agree with you,” retorted the doctor, “but as for getting a harbour you remind me of an optimist. I once asked a local publican for a definition of an optimist. ‘A phwat?’ asked Joe. ‘An optimist. Oh, he’s one of them devils that wears a yellow ribbon on St. Patrick’s Day and sings the ‘Battle of the Boyne’ and expects an encore,’ ” concluded the doctor amidst, laughter. At a meeting of unemployed held at Geraldine recently, at which there were 27 in attendance, one man looking foi work turned np in his motor car (says the Timaru Post).
