Collins to an iiiterjector who interrupted him in his address to ratepayers on harbour affairs the other evening (says the Gisborne Times). “How many of you could afford to nay £2 per £lOOO capital value for 25 years?” asked the doctor. “We could if we got a harbour,” came a voice. “I agree with you,” retorted the doctor, “but as for getting a harbour you remind me of an optimist. I once asked a local publican for a definition of an optimist. ‘A phwat?’ asked Joe. ‘An optimist. Oh, he’s one of them devils that wears a yellow ribbon on St. Patrick’s Day and sings the ‘Battle of the Boyne’ and expects an encore,’ ” concluded the doctor amidst, laughter.
