EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was commenced on Wednesday. the chairman (Mr J. Wallace) presiding. There were also present: Messrs R- H. Todd, George Livingstone, J. Mitchell, James Smith, P. M’Kinlay, L. Sanderson, J. H. Wilkinson. D. T. Fleming, M.L.C., and J. M.P. APPLICATIONS. The Owaka Committee applied for the half-cost of erecting a stile on the east boundary fence, and one-third of the cost of erecting a fence on the top of the terrace.—Granted. An application from the head teacher of the Rcmahapa School for the installation of electric light in the school residence was granted, subject to the usual terms. The Lauder Railway Committee applied for a subsidy for fencing the school ground.—lt was decided that half-cost be granted. The Glenomaru Committee applied for a subsidy for cutting ti-ees. —The architect to report. The Ardgour Committee asked for assistance in sinking a well for drinking water. The Architect recommended that the assistance be granted on a subsidy basis.—Approved, and agreed that halfcost be granted. ' RECOMMENDATIONS. The Architect recommended that the Teaneraki Committee’s application for improved conditions at the school be granted.—Approved. Tlie Architect’s recommendation that additional tables and chairs for the infant department at the High Street School be purchased was approved. The Cromwell Borough Council wrote intimating that it desired to enlarge the fire brigade building, which occupied a corner of the school residence property. The Architect reported that the land referred to was of little value to the board, and he recommended that permission to enlarge the building be granted.—Agreed to.

The Architect recommended that the Waipahi Committee’s application for drainage of the playground be granted.— Agreed to.

The Architect reported that he found that the Henley School "rounds were in good order, and recommended that no action be taken other than subsidising any amount raised .ocally.— Recommendation approved. lhe Architect recommended new gates for the playground of the Waihola School, and several minor improvements to the buildings.--Agreed to. On the Architect’s recommendation, the Dunbaek Committee’s application for two electric heaters in the school was declined. In reference to an application bv the Milburn Committee to have trees on the old school section cut down, the Architect recommended that, as they served no useful purpose, the application be granted.— Approved. GENERAL. The Kaikorai Committee applied to have accommodation found in the school for children housed in the gymnasium. The senior inspector reported that there was sufficient accommodation in the school for all classes without using part of the gymnasium.—lt was decided that the committee be advised to that effect. The Chairman reported that at the request of tho department he had granted Mr Renfrew White the necessary facilities for carrying out his special work in physical instruction in several Dunedin schools.—The chairman’s action was approved. CONVEYANCE OF CHILDREN. lhe parents of Ripponvale and Kawarau Gorge children forwarded a copy of a letter sent to the Minister of Education protesting against the board’s proposal to discontinue the conveyance ser ' ice unless thev paid 5s ver quarter per family.—The Chairman said the board would have to take up a stand and pay no more than the usual capitation fees. It pnded itself o n seeing that every school child m the district was conveyed to a ndXr? ’ but ’ fc conl<l not on paving £6OO per annum.—lt was decided to hold die matter over until next meeting of the board, and to carry on the conveyance in the meantime.
