A GENEROUS DONOR.

Yet another gift for our Public Art Gallery. By last British mail Pie president (Mr J. Loudon) received the following letter from Mr A. F. Roberts, Fairnilee, Galashiels, Scotland :— June 15, 1927. Dear Sir, —I bought a picture a short time ago at a sale in Edinburgh, which I thought a very nice one, suitable for a Public Gallery—“ The White Cockatoo,” by Robert Hope, R.S.A.—and delayed writing you until it was shipped. To-day I have received copy of hill of lading from Messrs A. Dott and Son. 1 have much pleasure in sending it to you, and hope it will prove an acceptable addition to your collection. A short time ago I sent my brother an illustration of thc picture, taken from the sale catalogue, which he may show you before you get this letter. It, of course, gives you no idea of the colour, which is very good aud pleasant. —Yours faithfully, Alex. F. Roberts. The President, Public Art Gallery, Dunedin. It is most cheering to think we have a friend so many miles distant who takes such an interest in our local Gallery. Mr Roberts consigned some two years ago a valuable water colour (as a gift) by thd Wiltshire, but the steamer was unfortunately wrecked, and thc picture lost. To make up for the disappointment he repeated the gift by sending that fine picture, “ The Quoitcrs,” which now hangg in the Gallery. From Mr Roberts's letter it may safely be assumed that the picture now on the way will be a worthy addition to the city's increasingly valuable collection.
