Charles Jeremiah Marshall (R. K. Ireland and A. J. Creagh). WAKATIPU. QUEENSTOWN, April 12. MUNICIPAL ELECTTONS. .The talk of elections is in the air. Considerably more interest than has been evidenced for years past in the biennial event is being taken in the future local government of this borough. The influence of the Progressive League is mainly responsible for this changed state of affairs. Al ready a ticket of nine townsmen, good and true, has been announced, and there is rumour of further starters breasting the tape at noon on nomination day. The following are those who are definitely announced, the five marked with an asterisk being quite new to municipal honours: — North Ward: Dr W. A. Anderson*. F. Gavin, and Robt. Gilkison, jun.*; Lake Ward; Messrs J. H. C. Lor den T. J. Melville*, and A. Scheib*; South Ward: Messrs J. P. Lix, Arch. M“Gaughan, sen.*, and Thos. Rutherford. It is interesting to note that Mr Gilkison is the borough solicitor, and Mr Melville is the. ex-borough clerk and treasurer. Never before can one remember so much new blood being in the field; so. it will be gathered things are moving in this remote hamlet of ours I We do not know yet whether we are to have a mayoral election. Mr H. Overton, who his served a long apprenticeship in the municipal worshop, is announced, but up to the present the retiring Mayor, Mr Andrew Simson has given no indication of his intentions. He has just completed 10 years in the. mayoral chair, prior to which he engaged in the deliberations at the table forfive .years as a councillor. One of the most 'important undertakings carried through. during his term of office was • the installation of the hydro electric light and power scheme. Mr Simson has devoted himself whole-heartedly to the interests and. business of the borough, and though he has not met with the approval of a section of the ratepayers, in all that he has done or left undone, there are those

who would strongly support his candidature should he stand again. Mr Overton may be said to have a strong claim, also, on the electors as he has proved an excellent councillor, he is a man of sound and progressive ideas, and has a splendid grip of municipal affairs. The probability, therefore, is that if both men go to the poll the choice of a chief magistrate will be made on purely personal grounds. BALCLUTHA. Nominations for the biennial election closed on Thursday at noon, and although assiduous efforts had been made to stimulate interest and provoke a contest for both Mayor and council, and particularly for the Mayoralty, these proved abortive, and no one came forward to contest the Mayoralty with Mr White, who was consequently re-elected unopposed for his third term. Four of the council of nine did not seek re-election, and at the last minute some difficulty was experienced in filling their places. Neither Mr James Grant, the borough’s representative on the Otago Power Board, nor Mr Pearson, Hospital Board representative, who were seeking re-election, met with any opposition, and they were also declared elected unopposed. Following are the details: — MAYORALTY. Sidney Valentine White, proposed by James Thomson and John Sbeddan. OTAGO POWER BOARD. Representative for Balclutha Borough and portion of Clutha County.—James Guest, proposed by D. G. Algie and Duncan Watt. SOUTH OTAGO HOSPITAL BOARD. John David, C. Dunbar, Geo. Gould, William James Hetherington, William Lester, Joseph Murcott, William A. Murcott, Henry Mursell, John Edward Murray; David Prain, Thomas Williamson, and Robert C. Woods. ALEXANDRA. Mr William Bringan, who has been on the council for a number of years, was the only candidate for the Mayoralty. He has been chairman of tho District High School, a member of the O.C. Electric Power Board, and is generally found assisting in any matter that pertains to the advancement of the borough and the district generally. He is considered fully entitled to the honour, and will have the unanimous support of the ratepayers. For the office of councillors active interest in the welfare of the borough is well maintained.
