An Auckland Press Association message states that Sir John Hosking is seriousiy ill in a private hospital. A private cable message reports the death in Sydney of Mr M Gotthelf. father of Mrs E. I. Halsted and Mrs P. L. Halsted, in his eighty-sixth year Nurses Johnston, M'Kinlay, Tangney, Helen M'Kenzie, and Annie M’Kenzie, of the St. Helens Hospital, Invercargill, have received advice from the examining authority that they were successful in passing the recent State examination in midwifery. On Thursday, July 9, Mr John Stewart, who has been selected as a member of the Maori touring football team, was entertained at a social and dance, in the Palmerston Town Hall, when the Mayor of Palmerston (Mr W. 11. Hopkins), on behalf of the townspeople and'the local footballers presented him >Yith a dressing case. On Saturday week a smoke concert was tendered to Mr Stewart by the members of the Eastern District llugby Sub-union. Tiiere was a largo attendance, and representatives of tho Pafiperston, Waikouaiti, Seacliff, Shag Point, and Dunback Clubs were, present m addition to a party of Maoris from Moeraki. The president of the union (Mr J. Gordon), on behalf of the union and friends presented the guests of tho evening with an inscribed pocket wallet, and from the Moeraki Maoris, Mr Stewart was the recipient of a tobacco pouch, which was presented by Mr Dungey. During fhe evening musical items were given, and before dispersing ihe Maoris gave a haka and a Native farewell. At a meeting of the combined Ravens.bourne and St. Leonards Presbyterian congregations on July 13 it was unanimously decided to extend a call to the Rev. J. J. Cairney, of Waikouaiti. On severing her connection with the North-East Valley School, Miss Myra Alexander was entertained by the staff at afternoon tea, and presented with several handsome .pieces of crystal ware. Mr Jones, in making the presentation, spoke of Miss Alexander’s energy and ability aa a teacher, and wished her all happiness in the future. The Rev. F. C. Long, a missionary from Karachi, India, arrived from the north on July 10 for a short tour of lectures and sermons about the work in India. Mr Long, who has had 16 years’ experience as a missionary in India, has for the last five years been principal of the Boys’ High School. at Karachi, and missionary in charge o f that district. Mr Long is an Aucklander, and a graduate of the University of New Zealand. Mr L. W. Hawkins, who for the past 18 months has held the position of district railway storekeeper at Hillside, has been transferred on promotion to Auckland, and on the eve of his departure was made the recipient of a parting souvenir, in the form of a travelling bag, from the Hillside staff. Mr R. C. Dixon (senior clerk), in making the presentation, referred to the cordial relationship which had existed between the staff and their ehief, and heartily congratulated Mr Hawkins on his promotion. Mr W. H. Johnston manager) also spoke in eulogistic terms of the manner in which Mr Hawkins had fulfilled his duties in respect of the workshops requirements, and wished him every success in his new sphere. A Pre?s Association cablegram from I.ondon states that the Commissioners of the 1851 Exhibition have awarded a senior overseas scholarship to Mr J. H. Vickery, of the University of Melbourne, in brochemistory, and similar scholarships to Messrs F. P. Bowdeh (Tasmania), and R. R. Nimmo (New Zealand) in physics. At the annual meeting of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, held last May, the President (Sir Thomas Holland) announced that ‘The Cc isolidated Gold Fields of South Africa (Ltd.)” premium of 40 guineas had been awarded to Dr H. C. Boydell, an associate of the Otago School of Mines, for his paper on “Tho Role of Colloidal Solutions in the Formation of Mineral Deposits. In 1912 this award was made to Mr W. A. M‘Leod, another graduate of the Jtago University Mining School for. a paper on “Steam Engine Efficiency.” Dr Boydell left last month for New Mexico to make n mineral •urvev of the Burro Mountains for an American mining corporation. Mr M‘Leod is carrying on a successful practice in London as a consulting mining engineer. Our Invercargill correspondent reports that Mr R. R. Binney has been appointed one of the representatives of the fire insurance companies on the Invercargill Fire Board, filling the vacancy caused by the recent resignation of Mr T. Chalmer, of Dunedin. Our correspondent reports that though the Prime Minister (the Hon. J. G. Coates) is still confined to his room, lie is gradually recovering from an attack of influenza, and may be able to attend the sitt’ • of Parliament to-day. Mr A. C. Bretherton, at present on the staff of the Public Trust Office as inspector for the South island, has been appointed by the directors of the Perpetual Trustees Estate, and Agency Company as the company's district manager at Christchurch, where a branch of its business is being established Mr H. W. Boddy, at present accountant to the Wanganui Herald Newspaper Company, who has had considerable experience in trust, estate, and agency work in Dunedin, will shortly join the Dunedin staff of the company.
