LICENSING COMMITTEES.
DUNEDIN CITY. FOUR MODERATES RETURNED. The election of the Licensing Committee for Dunedin City for the ensuing three years took place oil Tuesday. Both the moderates and the prohibitionists nominated “full tickets” and the election resulted in a victory for the former, four of their number being returned as against one helonging to the other party. The members of the last committee, Messrs H ; ”iker, Carroll, and King, again offered their services, but none of them was successful in securing election. There was fairly heavy polling at the various booths in the Dunedin South district as considerable interest was manifested in the issue, the chief point being whether there would be or otherwise, of the licensed booths at Forbury Park and at Wingatui. The moderate ticket had a decided victory over the Temperance party as there was a margin of over 200 votes between the lowest moderate and the highest temperance candidate. AUCKLAND, March 9. The election of tne Auckland Licensing Committee, which aroused considerable interest on account of the controversy over the question of granting a license to a hotel in Quay street, resulted in the return of all the members of the old committee CONTEST AT HUTT. WELLINGTON. March 9. The Hutt licensing election for five members was contested by 14 candidates comprising two “tickets” and four independents. The result of the poll was the return of the moderate candidates as against those understood to be opposed to granting a conditional license for the Hutt racecourse. The following are the figures : August 1998, Anderson 1903, Bouden 1897, Foley 1772, Power 1698. Of the others Udv 1623, House 1633, Stonehouse 1448 and Piper 1364 were the nearest. It is understood that the Hutt racing meetings will now be wet instead of dry. VOTING IN WAKATIPU. QUEENSTOWN. March 10. The following was the result of the voting for the election of member to the Wakatipu licensing commitee : D. F. SUTHERLAND, Queenstown, CS2. WTLLIAM REID, Arrowtown, 655. u. A. J. THORNTON, Glenorchy, 634. CHARLES MURPHY, Alexandra, 627 LEOPOLD FAIGAN, Millers’ Flat, 606. Johannes Hansen, Waikaia, 545. There are two small returns yet to come. Polling throughout the electorate was very light. The largest number of votes received by any candidate at any one booth was at Alexandra, where 149 vetes were recorded in Mr Murphy’s favour at five booths. No electors at all exercised their franchise. DARGAVILLE, March 10. A fair amount of interest was taken in the licensing committee election, which was the first held for some time. With seven small returns to come the return of the old committee is assured, the only other candidate, Mr W. E. Barnard, who opposed the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates at the general election, being well beaten. TIIE OniNEMURI RESULT. WAIIII, March 12. The following were electel ns members for the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee:— W. J. Towers, P. E. Brennn, \V. M. Wallnutt (Moderates), and W. Marshall, W. F. Walters (No-license). There were 22 candidates.
