Deer ceased to be imported game within the State Forest Plantations in the Rotorua County by an Order-in-Council gazetted on February 25. The question aiose in the newspapers recently as to who has the longest service as a Justice of the Peace in New Zealand to his credit. A Wellington holder of that office has taken the trouble to make official inquiries, and he informs the Evening Post that he finds the honour is shared by two oentlemen—Mr J. S. Holmes, J.P.. of Portland crescent, Wellington, and Mr O. C. Cowan, J.P., of Winton. There can be no argument between these gentlemen for first place, unless it be an alphabetical one, for they both receded their appointment on the same day, October 6, 1870.
