That conditions in the timber industry at Stewart Island are quite satisfactory at the present time was the view expressed to a Southland Times reporter by Mr T. O’Byrne, who returned to Invercargill on Wednesday last after a visit to the two mills on the island. Mr O'Byrne said that the Maori Beach mill was working full time, and was employing 18 men at present. The Kapipl mill, however, was only in operation part of the time, and as the bush was nearly cut out it was expected to close down shortly. The two mills were producing approximately 80,000 superficial feet of timber weekly.
