PIPE BAND CONTEST.

{ DUNEDIN WINS CHAMPION*? SHIP. Included in last week’s wealth of at* tractions at the Exhibition .was a pipe band contest, which was hold on Wednesday. The contest will go down on record at one of the finest ever held in Austi alusia both in respect to the number of bands competing and the high standard of piping reached in most cases. The quickstep competition for the Hunter and Sir Harry Lauder Shields was held on Ihc Sports Ground, and each of the 13 bands, with flying plaids and swinging sporrans, presented a fine spectacle and executed the military movements cleverly. Unfortunately heavy rain ret in in the afternoon, and the marches, slow marches,

strathspeys, and reels had to be played in the Band Hall. Within the coniines of a building pipe music is not heard at its best, but the playing was again of a high standard, and the big crowd that filled the hall showed appreciation of it. The Citizens' Committee which conS tried the contest is to be commended for e admirable arrangements and has every reason to be gratified with the success attained. The judges of the piping were Messrs G. Munro, A. Foubister, and W. Sinclair; Mr H. Paterson judged the dress, and the military work was judged by Major Bell Captain Satterthwaite, ger-geant-major Laffey, and Sergeant instructor Matheaon.
