SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION.
QUARTERLY MEETING AT .NELSON. NELSON, February 20. The quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held this afternoon, when the following delegates were present:— . Southland, Messrs G. R. Cooper and J. S. Dick: Waimate, Mr G. A. Manchester; South Canterbury, Dr Paterson; Canterbury Automobile Association—Messrs F. W. Johnston, W. H. Nicholson, A. D. Dobson, and B. Falck; Pioneer Motor Cycle Club (Christchurch), Mr R. H. Parker; Marlborough— Messrs R. V. Bythell, H. J. Stace, and D. R. Dix: North Otago, Mr G. F Hindston; Otago, Mr W. L. Minson ; Nelson—Dr Gibbs, Messrs W. E. Wilkes and C. A. Hunter. Mr P. R. Harman, of Christchurch, is secretary. An apology for absence was received from Mr M. Passmore (Otago). It was resolved that the Union Comnanv he asked to reconsider the matter of reduced freight on cars oetween the islands. It was resolved to register the South Island Mutual Union Insurance Association when 130 members were enrolled. The following motion by Southland, which was deferred from last meeting:— “That the Government be urged to adopt legislation making it compulsory for drivers of vehicles to allow traffic approaching on the left at intersections to have the right of way”— was withdrawn in view of the hostile opinions expressed. The action of the Executive Committee in protesting against the proposed regulation affecting spotlights (it would render them useless) was confirmed. It was resolved to ask the Government to look into the matter of regulating the length of timber projecting behind lorries and to draw up regulations, without undue hardship to the trades concerned. A recommendation to the conference was that on the hills a car on the inside should pull up and allow the other to pass. It was resolved that the Government be requested to bring in compulsory third party insurance by motor vehicle owners so that in case of accidents or injury adequate funds would be available for the payment of damages. A proposal urging that Cabinet should give consideration to the formation of a Ministry o? Transport was deferred for submission to the associations. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr Bruce, South Island representative on the liighw'ays Board, in his illness.
