A NEW BOROUGH.

WELLINGTON, Februar 25. The first election of mayor and council for the new borough of Upper Hutt took place yesterday. There were two candidates for the mayoralty—Mr A J. M‘Curdy, for many years associated with the progress of the town, defeating Mr W. H. P. Barber, a former member of Parliament and a well-known Wellington business man, by 750 votes to 385. There were 20 candidates for the eight seats on the council, the following being elected:—Messrs C. L. A. Spearman, W Greig, H. E. Lodge, James Plowman, J. W. Beechey, S. Howell, J. K. Johnston, and T. R. Jameson.
