PUBLIC FINANCE.
DEPARTMENTAL EXPENDITURE. NECESSITY FOR ECONOMY. WELLINGTON, February 26. The Prime Minister stated to-day that m order to meet any possible fluctuations in public finance the Government had decided to appoint a special committee of public officers to investigate and report ns to departmental expenditure in the direction of economy and efficiency. The trade figures for 1925 showed a less favourable balance, and he hoped that the drop in export values would not unduly accentuate th© position. The tendency of imports to increase at a greater rate than our exports, however, merited a special warning as to over-importing, which, if continued, may bring * about a reaction that will affect the revenue. The present is the time for a review of the position and the practice of economy, both in public and private finance. The -special committee of departmental heads will consist of the Public Service Commissioner, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Chairman of the Railway Board and the Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department and will report as to the working of the reforms that were recommended and adopted in 1921-22. The committee will be able to estimate the value of the changes then instituted, and will also report as to further reforms and improvements in the departmental control of finance.
