COST OF THE NAVY.
TOOR BRITISH TAXPAYER. Addressing the Navy League Conference on Thursday, Mr R. D. D. M'Lean quoted an official statement made by Lord Jellieoe in Brassey’s Naval and Shipping Annual. Lord Jellieoe, he said, pointed out that if it were possible for the dominions to come to a general agreement to contribute in kind to the cost of the navy at a rate, say, of 17s per head of the population, while Great Britain and the Irish Free State gave at a rate if 23s per head (as against 30s at the present time), the figures would work out as follows: Great Britain and the Irish Free State .... £54.500.000 Australia 4,800.000 New Zealand 850.000 Canada 7.200,000 South Africa 850,000 India 850,000 Total £69.050.000 Under those conditions considerable relief would be afforded the British taxpayers, and the navy could be maintained at an adequate strength.
