SOUTH AFRICAN WAR.
REUNION OF VETERANS. Ike celebrations in connection with the signing of the treaty of Veroeniglng 21 years ago, \vh:c:i brought the Boer War to a close, were concluded on the 4th, when the Otago Officer.-,’ Clubrooni was crowded with South African veteran- when a most successful reunion was held. Many former friendships were renewed, ar.d many were the experiences again related of incidents which occurred during the guerilla warfare on the sun-parched African veldt. The Rev. D. Dutton, president of the Otago branch of the South African Veterans’ Association, occupied the chair. There were also present, the Mavor (Mr if. L. Tapley), the lion. C. E Slatham. and the Hon. Mr W. Downie btewart. Interesting addresses were given by the Chairman, the Mayor, the Hon. \\. Downie Stewart, Mr J. A. Bark (Fourth Contingent), Mr G L. Denniston. Colonel S. I!. Smith, Major M’Crae, Colonel Morns, gent), Mr 1,. Denniston, Colonel E. it. Stutiiam. Reference was made by some of the speakers to the splendid services to the British Empire after tho close of the war by Generals Botha and Smuts. Dr Falconer then moved a hearty vote of thanks to Messrs Ellis and Rigby, and the musicians, who had done much to make the function ihe success it was, which was carried by acclamation. A hearty vote of thanks, accompanied bv the singing cf “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” v. as accorded the chairman. During the evening enjoyable items were rendered by the members cf tile Idlers’ Quartette. Mr Haggitt provided the accompaniments. The function ended, as it had begun, with the singing of a verse of the National Anthem.
