WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The regular meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held at Palmerston on Saturday, there being present Messrs W. Ritchie (chairman), G. Ross, A. Murray, J. S. Miller, W. Freeland, A. S. Cambridge, J. O’Connell, and H. O’Neill. Mr John Purvis wrote complaining of the state of the Alexandra ro-ad leading to his property at Stoneburn, and requesting that something be done. —To be favourably considered when funds were available. Several ratepayers wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road from the Taieri boundary to Hartfield. It was dangerous through being overgrown with tussock. The writers said they could provide horses and a plough to root out the tussocks.—The inspector to obtain further information. Charles M‘Gregor applied for permission to lay pipes on a road near his homestead.— Permission granted, subject to the inspector’s approval. A. E. Wood wrote asking for the privilege of including a small piece of ground adjoining sections purchased by him in Waynes Town, in connection with fencing operations being carried on by himself. —Granted during the pleasure of the council. The Otago Motor Club wrote asking the council to erect a sign at Horse Range Kurtigi Beach Junction road, also a sign at Muddy Creek, near Bushey Railway Station.—The sign with regard to the latter locality to be erected. With regard to the other sign, the Waihemo County Council has no jurisdiction, it being outside the county’s boundary. The Secretary of the Otago Expansion League wrote asking the council’s decision as to its willingness to be included within the district to be covered by the proposed Otago Electric Power Board.—The council agTeed to inclusion. The Otago Hospital Board wrote intimating that the levy ior the year for the Waihemo County would be £l6l2.—Received. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote forwarding a copy of a letter sent by the City Council to the Prime Minister concerning the matter of separate hospital districts for Otago. A reconsideration of the whole question had been asked for. —It was agreed to support the request made. The Department of Health wrote intimating that in connection with the cost of health inspection it might become necessary to charge local contributing bodies at the rate of Gd per head of population.—Received. The Waimea County Council forwarded a resolution passed by it to the effect that a tyre tax should be equitably allocated amongst all counties and road boards. —Received. The council decided to support a resolution passed by the Taieri County Council to the effect that in connection with hospital levies these should be a charge on the consolidated revenue. The Inspector (Mr A. M'William) reported for the month that certain work had been carried out in Bushey Riding. He reported that Mr Smith was willing to give a small corner at Bushey to provide a better view of the road. Mr Smith would supply posts if the council would provide wire and labour for fencing. With regard to Goodwood Riding', Mr M'William reported that, owing to scarcity of gravel, he had not been able to provide gravel for Goodwood road, as authorised. It would be necessary to get gravel from the bridge for this road, as the gravel pit at Bushey would be worked out when the present contract for Muddy Cheek was completed. Two planks on Pleasant River bridge required to be reinstated. As to Blue Mountain Riding, the crossing near M'Donald’s (back road) would be repaired as sopn as surfaceman Shaw had finished grading. About 14 chains of gravelling work was required on the Switchback road. Several places were very bad. About 100 yards of gravel would be required. Certain road work in the Green Valley Riding had been left over until the spring. The roads in Macraes Riding were in fair order for this time of year. The remainder of the report dealt with work already done.— The two planks required for the Pleasant River bridge were authorised. It was Tesolved to call for tenders for 100 yards of gravel for the Switchback road in Blue Mountain Riding. It was decided to invito tenders for 200 yards of gravel for Dunback Riding. Jlia inspector was instructed to report ou a complaint from Mr Win. M'Elwee as to the state of the road leading to his homestead. The tender of D. Robertson for carting gravel to Taieri Peak road at 4s lOd per yard was accepted. The council confirmed the motion passed at a previous meeting as to the striking of rates as follows:—Hospital rate, Jd in the £ over the county. General rate: Blue Mountain Riding, Jd; Meadowbank, Jd; other ridings, Jd. It was decided to notify property owners that it was necessary to cut back all hedges at present overhanging the roads. The accounts passed for payment for June and July respectively amounted to £173 and £147.
