DIPHTHERIA
DEALING WITH THE DISEASE. WELLINGTON, September 4. The Minister of Health (the Hon. C. J. Parr) made available for publication to-day the following memorandum from the Director-general of Health:—“You will note by the attached article, copied from the Journal of Ihe Red ( ross, that New Zealand is not by any means the only country where an unusual prevalanco of diphtheria is worrying the health authorities. Fortunately in this country we have not been busy ‘ breaking epidemic records.' as is stated to be the case in the Old World. It is also pleasing to inform you that the Schick method of immunising mentioned has been used by the department during the last two years, and is now being used in connection with the Canterbury" and other diphtheria epidemics with excellent results.” The article discusses both the Schick reaction and the toxinantitoxin immunisation. By the first, of these methods doctors are now able to find out whether or not a child is liable to catch diphtheria. If found to bn susceptible the second method is invoked to pro--1 duce immunity.
