ROBBERY IN THE CITY
A SAFE BLOWN OPEN. Some little time ago two powder magazines in the city were broken into and quantities of gelignite and fuse stolen. This may or may not have any connection with an explosion which took place on Friday in the premises of Messrs J. Lindsay and Co., produce merchants, situated in Cumberland street south. When Mr Lindsay and his employees locked up the premises at 5 o’clock everything was then all right. Upon the return of the proprietor a little before 8 p.m. he found the premises full of smoke, and iuiestigations showed that the safe had been operated upon by an explosive and the door blown some little distance away. The explosive had apparently been inserted in the keyhole and a fuse about four feet in length used to fire it. The eashbox, which was left locked up in the safe, is missing, but it is understood not to have contained a large sum of money, as Mr Lindsay had banked that afternoon. There is no evidence that the place was broken into, and it is assumed that an entrance was gained by means of keys.
