RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. OTAGO HUNT CLUB RACES. The Otago Hunt Club was unlucky in tile fact that rain set in in the forenoon, and no doubt the threatening weather was responsible for keeping many people away from Wingatui on Saturday afternoon. Despite the uninviting morning, however, there was an excellent attendance, and patrons were rewarded for their courage by not only seeing some interesting racing, but they also had the pleasure of enjoying it under a blight sun, which made the afternoon quite warm and summerlike. Some fair-sized fields were seen out, but the cross-country horses were rather a poor lot. Mr \Y. Rudkin made his debut as a starter of gallopers, and on the whole acquitted himself fairly- well. The track was in excellent order, and the card was got off without serious injury to any of the riders who lost their seals in the saddle. The management of the meeting had matters working smoothly, and gave their patrons a good day’s varied sport. Pamplona was elected a strong favourite for the Hunters’ Hurdles, but he was seriously interfered with by Red Fire, who bumped his rider off at the stand hurdle and blocked the favourite and lest him .several lengths. Pamplona rather hurriedly made up ground, and was in charge at the five-furlong (lost, where lie dwelt and lost ground. Grange then took charge, and won after stalling off Dovvnstroke, who hud made up a lot of ground over the last half-mile. The mix-up to the favourite cost him a good chance of success, but none of the others were dangerous over the last half-mile. Strowana stopped badly after being in charge in the early part of the race. Backers went strongly for Kilcullen in the Jockey Club Stakes, the filly carrying nearly three times as much support as Filag ree, who went out second choice. They got away to a good start, from which Kilcullen was first- to show out. Gahvay carried her along up to the straight, with Mirza in close attendance. Kilcullen was momentarily in charge at the distance, where Mirza put in a claim. A good finish saw Galway wear down Kilcullen and beat her a short lialf-'ength, with Mirza a neck away third, and then close up came Rex Sylva, Osterman, and St. Augustine. The others _ never threatened danger. The favourite looked a- shade on the big side in condition, and although carefully handled, jest failed to see out her task. A field of seven saddled up for the Otago Hunt Club Cup in which Likelihood was sent _ out a rather better favourite than Luigi. The favourite tipped out at the first fence, and Luigi, Tiaditor, and Silver Top were responsible for carrying on the pace to the stand double. Luigi resumed command after landing over the sod wall, finally beat Dardanelles by three lengths. Traditor was a bad third. SilverTop came down at the first of the double in tiie back stretch. Both the unshipped riders escaped injury. Tainui completed the course a long way back. All on the card went to the post for the Kennels Handicap, and backers concentrated their attention on Listening Post and Sunny Corner. They were sent away from a moving start, in which Kilboyne got an advantage, and was followed by Listening Pest, the pair being weli clear in the first few strides, whilst Night Alarm, Jock, and Multiplication were slowest to get going. Listening Post and Kilboyne were still well clear at the far turn, and turning for home Satisfaction, Sunny Cor* nei'j and Bebehead were improving their position. Kilboyne retired when heads were straightened for home, and Listening Post, shaking off Satisfaction, won nicely by a length. Bebehead wag a short, length away, third, and Sunny Corner another two lengths off. fourth. Isla Wilkes was a strong order in the Wingatui Trotting Handicap. She, however. broke up when in charge after going a furlong and a-half and again when ruining out of the straight. Meanwhile Bronwood and Indian Child were showing the way along the back, whilst Silver Shoe had moved up to a position near the leaders. Isla Wilkes got going and was making up ground at the finish, but Indian Child won comfortably by four lengths from the favourite, who beat Silver Shoe a similar distance, with Bronwood next. The Maiden Steeples proved lo be a chapter of accidents. Canbin-ia and Dusky ran off the course after leading the way over the first jump. Cappa dropped his rider at the water-jump, and Likelihood ran off a,t the stand double and was followed by Tahuna and Brownwing. Heroic and Castle Bar went on, but both refused twice at the post and rails. Castle Bar then got over and went on from Brownwing and Heroio, whilst Tahuna was following on a long way behind. Castle Bar kept going and won by 12 lengths from Brownwing, who beat Heroic by 200vds. The Vanxhall Hack Handicap field was partially filled up with several green performers and backers singled out Lomagundi and Filagree. They were sent away from a fair line from which Matata and Ruena were smartest away from Filagree who, however, scon faded out. Kilroy, Bonnv Olive, and Lomagundi were handy to tho leaders over the first three furlongs. Lomagttndi joined the leaders before reaching the straight, and in a good finish beat Ruena a head, whilst Matata was a neck away third with Osterman making up ground a length away. The card concluded with nine going to the post for the Hunters’ Plate, and Grim Joke went out the best lacked horse of the day. The favourite was always handy until reaching the straight where Red Book took charge, but finally failed to withstand the challenge from War March, who name with a well-timed run and won by a head. Red Fire was about two lengths away just in front of Claverhou.se, and then came Grim Joke. Tho amount put through the machine came to £17,258, as compared with £16,366 for the meeting last year. Childs rode the winner, which, like Caligula, the 1929 winner, is by The Tetrarch. The small field was due to the belief that the race was a certainty for Bullock, who had the mount on Crag-an-Eran. Franklin and Westward Ho entered the straight abreast. Polemarch challenged a furlong from home, and stayed the 'best. Won by a length and a-half ; three 'lengths between second and third, Crag-an-Eran close IV: fourth. WEIGHTS, ACCEPTANCES, ETC. ASHBURTON COUNTY RACING CLUB'S S P RIN G MEE TING. A three days' sale realised 127,805 guineas. INCREASE OF STAXtS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 6. At a meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club increases in the stakes were decided upon for the spring meeting. The Electric Plate has been eliminated and an Acorn Stakes substituted. This is for two-year-old fillies, for which the stake is £SOO, the distance fivo furlongs, and the weight 8.0, with penalties. The increases made total £6BIO, making a total to be distributed during tha year of £49,800. A RECORD JUMP. SYDNEY, September °. Mr Judd’s Sundown cleared 7ft- 91in in a high jump—a world's record —at the Albury Show. S down established a record on the same ground in 1919, when he jumped Tit 92in. RACING PERMITS. MEETING OF CANTERBURY M.P.’S. CHRISTCHURCH, September 7. At a meeting of the Canterbury members of Parliament to-day a deputation was received from the Amberley Racing Club. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., said the Amberley Club had apparently satisfied the Racing Commission, but to its astonishment its permit had been taken away, and given to Rangiora. Mr G. B. Stalky, president of the Club, read a statement criticising the commission’s report, which he said showed absolute ignorance of local needs. Their meetings had been carried on for 40 years, and their buildings cud grounds w.io in good shape. The commissioners were supposed to encourage country meeting.-. They said that Amberley was amongst the best, yet they had certainly “encouraged” it with a vengeance. Permits had been granted in the North Island to far inferior clubs with poor appointments, and short courses The chairman of the meeting (Mr L. M. Isit-t, M.P.) said the matter would be fought out vigorously in the House. II is_ personal conviction was that the permits in Christchurch should be reduced; they should also be reduced in other centres and given to the country.
