CLUTHA POULTRY CLUE

SECOND ANNUAL SHOW. For so young a society the Clufha Poultry Club is to be heartily commended upon the success of its second annual show, which vms held in t.he Oddfellows’ Hall at Halclutha on Friday. it was apparent, both from trie iuiercst evinced and from the large number of entries forward, that the club is now an established local institution with a useful future before it as a means of encouraging the breeding of poultry and improving the conditions of this growing industry generally. The management of the show reflected credit on the energetic committee, headed by" the president (Mr D. G. Alg'io), which had all the arrangements well in hand, and which left nothing undone that would ensure success. Tire secretary (Mr K F. Allison) and his assistant (Mr M. O. Brown) performed their duties expeditiously and efficiently, and were at all times courteous and obliging. A notable feature of the show, and one which made iL especially attractive from the point of view of its patrons, was the excellent system adopted of staging the exhibits, which gave full opportunity for examining the entries without undue crowding. There was a large attendance during both the- afternoon and evening, and in connection with the sale of admission tickets an art union was conducted, giving purchasers a chance to become the owner of parcels of gold dust ranging in value from £2O to £2 10s. Opportunity was taken of the presence of the Hon. \\ . Nosworthy in the town to ask him officially to declare the show open. In doing so, he expressed his pleasure at seeing the club in such a flourishing condition, and wished it every success in the future. If he was in this district at the same time next year lie would have much pleasure in again declaring the show open, because he realised that the industry was a growing'one, and one that should be encouraged to the fullest possible extent. —(Applause.) The show was well supported by local fanciers as well as by breeders from Kaitangata, Milton, Nightcaps, Invercargill, Ashburton, and Christchurch, and in point of numbers the entries were considerably ahead of those of last year, especially in the utility sections. Generally speaking, the quality was of a very high standard, and gave the judges, Messrs 11. L, bprosen and A. C. Goodlet, a difficult task it! making their awards. An added degree of interest was lent to the show by the inclusion of a number of championships awarded by (lie ! South l-.land Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary j Association. The principal of these was that for black Orpington-, and this was won i by a fine cock shown by Mr T. R. Harris. | the well-known Southland fancier and | breeder. The championship for white : A> yandottes (utility) weait to a cock shown by Mr J. p. Barclay, of Kuitangata; and j the duck championship was awarded to an | Indian Runner shown by Mr H. N. Goodj man. The remaining championship went to | a light canary mule shown by Master J. | Baker. The best bird in the show was : adjudged to be Mr J. Campbell’s white ! Wyandotte cock, which gained a similar disI tinction at the Kaitangata Show about a ! fortnight ago, aval which as a cockerel held ! ail unbeaten record. Mr J. P. Barclay 1 gained the special prize for the most point* i in the heavy breeds (utility classes', and I Mr P. A. Watt annexed a. similar honour ; for the light breeds. 'i he two sped:.! j awards for the best local birds in the show j we: e v. on in the re.-po.-tivc sections by Mr •3. Wilkins, with an American barred Plvi mouth Rock pellet and a white Rock pulI let. In ilw main there was splendid coni- ! petition throughout the utility sections, and j the white Leghorns provide:! the largest class, the pullets being; the outstanding fea- * Pure, there being no fewer than 27 entries forward. The black Orpingtons .also made a , good display of typical specimens, and in | Loth of the.se sections the awards anti the i numerous special prizes awarded were di—- ! tributed over a number of well-known breeders. In ducks, Indian Runners comprised (tie bulk of the entry, the exhibit being of a very high standard. Some very pleasing exhibit's were put forward in the bantam sections, and, although the pigeon classes worn not numerous, t here wortseveral really good Jacobi; s.
