WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual meeting of the Waihcmo County Council was held in the council chambers, Palmerston, on Saturday. Mr J. S. Miller presided, and there were piepent : Crs G. Ross, A. Murray, W. Ritchie, W. Freeland, J. O’Connell, H. O’Neill, arid G. Clark. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector reported that general surface work had been done and maintenance gravel placed on the Bushey-Shag Point road, and that the roads generally were in fairly good order. The grading of the Bushey-Palmcrston road would be gone on with as soon us the grader returned from Green Valley. In the Goodwood riding, general surface work and the supply, cartage, and spreading of gravel and metal on the back of the Goodwood-School road had been carried out. The roads in the riding were now in good order. In the Meadow Bank riding the water tables had been cleaned and general surface work carried out. In the Blue Mountain riding repairs had been effected to the protective fence near Isbister’s property, and the bridge at Wilcox’s had been tarred and painted. Ihe painting and tarring of the bridge at Sweet Water had been carried out. In the Green Valley riding the roads and crossings were in fair order. In Macraes riding the new surfaceman (Mr T. Peddic) had commenced his duties. Messrs Peddie and Mills nart made a start carting out metal from Mr Ilelien’s property, and should complete the contract shortly. A deputation front the Waihcmo Council and the Maniototo County Council had inspected the bridge at Cayburn and certain repairs were tiecidi'd upon which would in Like t,ie bnctge serviceable for seven or eight years.—The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. A lengthy letter was received from the secretary of the South Island Motor Union, Christchurch, drawing attention to the danger to motorists caused by high trees and fences, and suggesting that the council should make some endeavour to minimise the danger by notifying owners ana occupiers to trim fences and trees near corners. —Received. Messrs J. and D. Burgess, G.enpark, wrote asking permission to plough the side of the road adjoining their property in an endeavour to kill the gorse. tire lequccu was granted. The Under-secretary, Mines Department, Wellington, wrote informing the council that the receiver cf gold revenue at Naseby had applied to the department for authority to have the rent outstanding on a mining claim once held by one Robert Oockeull, at Macraes, written oft, on the grounds that it was not recoverable. —The request was granted. r J he County Clerk. Ashburton, forwarded a resolution by his council relating to the high rate of interest charged on money in the dominion, and stressing the point that the dominion needed cheap money for development purposes.—Hie council decided to support the resolution. Mr A. Gunn wrote pointing out the bad condition of the Stonoburn road, in the Dnnback Riding, which was impassable for both motor and gig traffic.—The matter was left in the hands of the 'inspector, with power to act.. The Secretary of the Dnnback School Committee wrote soliciting a donation of £5 towards the cost of the Dnnback School memorial. —Received, the council to make the donation. The Secretary of the Dnnback Memorial Committee wrote applying for the captured German field gun which had been allotted to the council, and Mating that if the request were granted the gun would be erected at the Dun back monument. —It was decided to grant the request. Accounts amounting to £227 14s 4d for (he month of June, and to £235 8s for July, were passed for payment.
