CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By

ORBERVES.

Riccarton has been exceptionally quiet during the past week. At this season of the year there are not a great many horses, as a rule, doing fast work, and with nearly 20 of them absent at Trentham, assisting at the Wellingt-m Racing Club’s meeting, tho local tracks have borne a deserted appearance. There will not lie much improvement in ihe early part of tins week, but in another week there should be a decided change in tiie conditions, lly mat time all our horses should be home, while we can also look for the early arrival of North Island horses who aie to race at the Grand National meeting. As soon as ihe visitois put in an appearance, interest in tiie track doings will increase, and owing to the long gap between the meetings at Trentham and Riccarton it is probable that we will have visiting h'-r.-es to create excitement on our lot al track.- much earlier than u.-ual. The alteration in the Rules of Racing ill the direction of abolishing half-mile races will affect several r.u; s at Riccarton. There are four half-mile flutters on the November piogramme of the Canterbury- Jockey Club, and only the Welc me Stake? will remain next season, noiuinati; r ■ having already closed for that event. A coupie of iwo-\ear-old handicaps will have to lie increased to five furlongs, while tiie Electric Plate will nresnniablv he treated in a similar manner. Lv November two-year-oids may be ready for five-furhmg> races, but for ciiihs racing cm-iier in the season the change may not be so acceptable. The new arrangement lor >he granting of license? to trainers and jo Leys by a < ommittee of the Racing Conference is one that lias everything to recommend it. 1 uder the old system each District. Hvho is not likely to be at his best as a face hoi se for some time yet. The intention, of G. Murray Aynsley is to bring him along gradually, anti when he is old enough to try him as a jumper. Endure and his stablemate Kauwhero are at present laid aside with strangles. In the meantime the remainder of J. B. Pearson s team have escaped the trouble. Glentanuer has gone into R. Emerson’s stable, and has resumed work after a spell. He is much bigger than when he was previously training, but being naturally one of the lean sort, it remains to oe seen whether he will hold Ins condition when he is set seme serioue tasks on the training tracks. Grange Mart has been recommissioned by G. Murray Aynsley', and she will be got ready for spring engagements. The daughter of Nassau and Marline is a useful galloper, and as she stays well, she may win some decent stakes next season. '1 he North Island gelding, Prince Hal, by Marble Arch—Martian Princess, is under offer to a Canterbury sportsman, but it is doubtful if the deal will be closed. Since being put into work, the champion piacer Author Dillon is just getting into racing shape. From present appearances he is likely to train on well for the Addington meeting in November. It is staled that the Sydney sportsman Mr W. J Carter, will bring a team here to race at Addington in November. Among them will be a pony trotter, with a record of 4.46, and a pacer with a mile record of 2.15. I understand that Mr Carter’s horses will go into B. Jarden’-: stable. That fine pacer John Dillon has evidently got to the end of his racing career. A suspensory ligament has gone, and it will be hard to patch him up, even for a short race. E. Cockeril! is keeping Agathos and Frank Tracey hard at work at Addington, and both horses look well. W. J. Morland has his two young pacers, Lndy Joan and After Hours, in rare good form. They look like getting some money next season. There is a two-year-old pacer in work at Addington who gives promise of being a champion. He is by Logan Pointer from the trotter Mayflower, and, though email, he is full of quality, w'hile already he can pace fast enough to w'in good races. The trotter Albertoria, who has been a long time ofi the scene, has resumed work as a member of E. J. Berry’s team. F. Holmes is working a big team at pie sent, including Kola Bell, Gay Wilkes, Logan Queen. Lady Pointer, Greta, Sherwood, and Trix Pointer. The last-named pair moved pleasingly in a work out one morning last week. It looked as if Trix Pointer could be got to her best form very soon. WELLINGTON NOTES. (Fboji Our Own Correspondent.) July 14. T. F. Quinlivan informed your correspondent at Trentham that be would not take up his residence here until October. George Jones has already secured accommodation for eight horses of Mr W. G. Stead’s for the spring meeting. H. M‘Sweeney rode the winners of both the Jumpers’ Flat and Winter Hurdles at Trentham on Wednesday. Alteration is out of Eduam, dam of Labour Day. and the Great Northern Hurdles winner, Fisher. Sir Fanciful, a stablemate of the lastnamed, was expected to show improvement on his Wanganui and Auckland running in the Winter Hurdles, but, he only shaped moderately. Penury Rose ran a good race for his first appearance in open company. Better ridden, Sea De’il might have reversed positions with Alteration. That was probably the opinion of the rider of the lastnamed, as after the race Air Riddiford was negotiating for the purchase of the Seaton Delaval gelding. Air George Currie was among the visitors at Trentham. He informed me that this season 13 of the two year-old progeny of Absurd had won 34 races of the value of 13,57050v5. His progeny had this term with 23 winners secured 61 races and 21,08Qsovs in stakes. This does not include the two races won by Loyal Irish in Australia. Both Loehella and General Advance shaped moderately in their races at Tren- - Miss AJUriel helped to pay expenses of the trip when she ran second in the Parliamentary Handicap, and paid her supporters a double-figure dividend. AUCKLAND TOPICS. By Dioghr Matters at Ellerslie are fairly quiet at present. A number of horses are away at the southern fixtures, while those remaining at home are having an easy time. Thra-ce is getting through plenty of work. The son of Poseidon in grea-t form, and will probably be taken to Riccarton, * Quiniro is shaping well in his schooling tasks ever hurdles, and looks like turnin'* out useful at the game. Poanui and Besant, two members of C. Ooleman’s team, are being schooled' over hurdles. The former’s displays are very good for a beginner. Deviation is to be given another opportunity on the race track. The aged son of Elevation is one of the active brigade at Ellerslie. The veteran Uncle Ned lias been taken in hand again to be prepared for next season’s racing. Asthonia is shaping well in his work. The Elysian gelding wiii be a competitor at the Gisborne meeting. Guerre a Mort is being kept going at Ellerslie. lie is a useful sort over hurdles vvhen the company is not too select. Glen Canny is getting through useful work on the track, and will be ready for spring racing. Arch Salute was the only Ellerslie-trained horse to ge.t on the winning list on the opening <iay at Wellington. Locally Sylvan was considered a much better proposition for the event. Sea Deil was well fancied for the Winter Hurdles, but was unfortunate in strikin'* a good one in Alteration. Te Oro is not having the best of luck over hurdles. In his three starts over sticks he has run second once and third twice. Lord Kenilworth jumped exceptionally well in hia schooling work at Ellerslie, but failed to get round in the Winter Hurdles at Wellington. With a little experience, the Kenilworth gelding should pay his way over the sticks. Damp feet usually result in a cold. Get **NAZOL.” No cold is Nazol-proof. Sixty closes la 6d. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON RACES. (From; Oub Si-ecial Reporter. ) WELLINGTON, July 13. The Wellington winter meeting opened in fine weather, but tiie going was on the heavy side. An excellent attendance viewed the sport, which was supplied by large fields, but several decisive wins eventuated. Coalition won handsomely „d promises to see a short price in the steeplechase, 'lari made a one-horse race of the Stewards’ Handicap, Out in such a large held a good run materially affects the result. Still nothing seemed to have a chance with the winner. Battle Scene ran well to the distance, but dropped away when in pursuit of the leader, which was hopeless. Battle Knight, Mustard Pot, Ruddy, and Prince Martian also ran well. Paddington Green was gong well when he lost his rider in the Hunters’ Steeples, in which John Bunny rail a solid race, but Silent Dick had too much pace lor him. Alaiiham went well lor a part of the way, but tired. Golden Glade ran off when going well, and Yankee Jack shaped lairly well. Koh,naiihut pulled up lame, and this accounted for his not shaping up to expectations. Sa.rtolino did not jump well, but struggled on into a place. Grotesque scored well, but had to be ridden out to boat Rose of Athens, who, with Alercsanta, displayed pace. Lord Alartian and Ditchley both shaped as if they will be seen to better advantage in future. Hyttus set a solid pace in tho Vittoria Handicap, but just lasted long enough to beat Dick. Arch Salute cleared out after entering the straight in the Parliamentary Handicap, but .Miss Alunel might have been closer with a better run when passing the three-furlong post. At this stage both she and Jock looked dangerous. Royal Star made up a lot of ground, but Clean Sweep laded out alter being prominent for six furlongs. Admiral Codrington was a much fancied horse, but he also faded out at the business end. Kngour shaped well for about a mile, and Strategy ran an excellent race with 10.9 on his three-year-old back. Alteration outstayed tile opposition in the Winter Hurdles, in which Giadful looked dangerous at the home turn, but Sea Deil beat him home. Gamecock lay a long way back, but was travelling on, ins final effort coming too late. He, however, has to be allowed to run his own race. Distance troubled Hyginas, who will be dangerous over a shorter course, in fact, distance and going anchored most of the field. The totaiisator turnover amounted to £63,976 10s as against £65,489 last year. A feature of the day was the excellent control weilded by Air O. O’Connor as starter. Sturdee was unlucky in slipping after landing and galloping- a few strides past the fence nine luriongs from home, and Paddington Green was travelling well when he cam© down halt a mile from home. Coalition, however, woti well, and would have taken a power of beating. Alias Aluriel also won well, and showed improved stamina.
