There will be some good stakes to race for in this district next season. The Avondale i .'up, run at the spring meeting in September, wiii carry a stake of ZOOOsovs. Hitherto tlie distance has been 1C furlongs, but next season’s event will bo run ever a mile and a-half. Geoffrey and Landslide are being kept in steady work at Ellerslie, and will be well forward for racing in the spring. The pair should rank with the best of the tour-year-olds next season. Swift Flight is in steady work, and should be ioady tor early racing. The Englishbred horse lias been a keen disappointment so far, but may do better next season. lie lias shown a few good gallops on the track. C. Hodder lias tlie rising three-year-old Big Ben (Poloa —Chime) looking very well. The big fellow should be useful next season. Spirit Level is coming on nicely under H. Stewart's charge. The Australian-bred colt has shown some smaft work on the track, and may turn cut a good three-year-old. Lord Kenilworth has joined A. Julian’s team, and will he given a trial over hurdles. In his first schooling effort the Kenilworth gelding shaped leally well for a beginner, arid may prove a success at the game. Thrace is being kept going in view of the southern fixtures. Prince Charleroi has joined the active brigade at Ellersjje. The little felllow looks well after a rest. 1 hough Ngata was not started at Ellerslie, there did not appear to be anything seriously wrong with tho Maniopcto gelding. He will have plenty of followers for jumping events ahead. Kauri King did not have a very highclass field to meet in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, but had to strike liis colours to Crosswords. Racing improves tho son of bo.ult, so it should not be long before his number will be hoisted on top. Trainers at headquarters are turning their attention to the rising two-year-olds. The local division promises to be much stronger than usual next season. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. MIDDLIiMARCH RACES. The programme comprised six events—three steeplechases, two trotting events, and a hunters’ fiat lace. The ciub was rewarded with good fields, and cun and all entered info the spirit of the sport and helped to make tbs meeting the success it was, thanks to Messrs H. Kettle (clerk of the course) and R. Leslie (secretary), whose arrangements were highly satisfactory. Tlie jumping events were run off without mishap; in fact, it was quite a surprise to see such ail able display of horsemanship. The result of this meeting will doubtless go a long way to build up the Otago Hunt race meeting, a 3 the jumping horses showed a failturn of speed, and took the brush fences and sod wall in good style.
